Você fala “I woke up late and lost the bus.”? Muita gente se confunde com a forma de falar PERDER em inglês.
Em inglês, há dois verbos que podemos usar para falar PERDER: Lose e Miss. Veja quando usar cada um:
- LOSE:
Usa-se para falar de perdas que envolviam posse, ou perder alguma competição, um jogo – oposto de ganhar. Ex:
– This is the only key I have, please don’t lose it.
– I lost my cellphone on the train.
– They lost millions of dollars this year.
– Delta lost the battle against United.
– Nobody likes to lose.
– In spite of his efforts, John lost the competition to Phil.
- MISS:
Usa-se para falar de perdas que não envolvem posse. Perder o ônibus, perder o trem, perder o prazo, etc. Ex:
– Hurry, I don’t want to miss the flight.
– She arrived late and missed the beginning of the presentation.
– I’ll travel tomorrow and I’ll miss the celebration next week.
– Don’t miss the application deadline.
